Como

Capstone Project

Challenge:

The Porada Design Competition 2024 brief challenged designers to create innovative and functional beds that embody the essence of Porada’s brand—elegance, timeless style, and quality craftsmanship. This year’s theme encourages designers to explore designs that blend form and function, bringing sophistication and versatility to domestic environments. Entrants are expected to emphasize the use of wood, the brand’s hallmark material, while considering environmental sustainability. The designs should also align with Porada’s values, showcasing originality, practicality, and attention to detail that fits both modern and classic interiors.

Solution:

Como is a luxury design that combines elegance, durability, and ergonomic comfort. Crafted primarily from light oak for its structural elements, such as posts and braces, it brings a sense of natural warmth and strength. Dark walnut base railings and platform step add a fluid contrast, enhancing the bed’s visual appeal and grounding its design. The headboard, inspired by the serene landscapes of Lake Como, features intricate layers of wood resembling mountains and a marble-like inlay that adds a cloud like picture. Stainless steel brackets are used throughout for lasting support, ensuring stability and longevity. The floating platform and optimally positioned ottoman make it accessible and inviting, while its aesthetic resonates with heritage, craftsmanship, and a commitment to sustainability. Designed for both function and beauty, this bed is a timeless piece built to provide comfort and style for decades.

The ottoman at the end of Como is a stylish and functional addition, providing both a place to sit and a cohesive design element. Crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail as the bed, it features a sturdy yet elegant form that complements the overall aesthetic. With a height of 450mm, it’s ergonomically designed for comfort and ease of use, while the luxurious finish adds a touch of sophistication.

In addition to being a practical feature, the step around Como’s sides gives the design a feeling of elegance and improves accessibility. Crafted from dark walnut, it gently raises the bed frame, highlighting the bed’s presence in the space with a floating look. Its height has been carefully chosen to maintain the stylish, unified appearance of the complete arrangement while guaranteeing ease of use, particularly for elderly people.

Crafted with Dark Walnut the tables feature clean lines and a harmonious style that coincide with the bedside railing further enhancing the bed’s fluidity and the Como’s materials and colour palette. Their minimalist design allows them to integrate seamlessly, providing subtle yet essential storage that enhances the overall cohesiveness of the bedroom.

Como incorporates sturdy pine slats that provide durable, supportive foundations for the mattress, enhancing both comfort and longevity. The bed frame is reinforced with stainless steel hook brackets and brackets, used to securely connect the side railings and headboard to the main structure.
